First Blog Post

Hello! My name is Paige and this is my first year to LBCC. I am currently majoring in Childhood Development and plan to transfer to Texas State next year to begin my Elementary Education studies. I moved to Corvallis in September but I am from Portland. I enjoy photography. I used to shoot a lot when I was in high school and before I moved. I never took a class or really learned the setting on a camera, I just went with it. My 3 goals in this class are:

1. To learn the different settings and things I can use to make my photos more "interesting."

2. See other people's photos and learn a thing or two from them!

3. Become more experienced with not only a camera, but photography as a whole. Learn the in's and out's of it all!

While reading “It’s What I Do,” by Lysney Addario, I learned to take risks within my photography. To not be afraid to share the truth with the public and make sure to get every last detail you can, to give a clear story and explanation as to what’s going on. At the beginning of the book, she talks about going to Afganistan and preparing to take photos of the war. She and a few of her colleagues were in a car watching as rocket-propelled grenades went off. Debating if they should get out of the car or not, they did. Their next dilemma was how to approach people. Do they explain they’re photojournalists? This is something that I can connect the dots with what’s going on today. These protests are going on worldwide, and if a photojournalist goes to one, do they approach it as a job? Or do they join in the protest if they support the matter as well? It comes down to safety. For this assignment, I was super conflicted about what I should photograph. Then I realized, with everything going on in the world right now, the protests and such, why not capture that? While in the Zoom on Monday morning, we talked about how photojournalists could go to protests like the ones in Portland and distance themselves and make it known that they're only there to capture the matter. Earlier in the week when I started this assignment, the Portland protests weren't the safest and my parents didn't really want me to put myself in dangerous situations if I actually went to one. Maybe people would get the wrong message and do something to harm me. So instead, I captured the aftermath. June 2, 2020, Portland, OR.
