Free Shoot


August 2, 2019, in Pendleton, Oregon. This overall landscape was
taken inside a moving Uhaul. My dad and I went on a road trip to Texas
to move my sister and her husband. I personally like landscapes the most,
especially when going to places I've never been to. When driving through Pendleton, I noticed that
the route we took was pretty flat compared to Gresham and Portland hills and mountains.
The sky looks like it blends into the land towards the middle of the photo
and I'm glad I got to capture that.


August 2, 2019, American Fork, Utah. Within the same day, my day and I
drove through Utah. I had never been to Utah and when driving through it,
I realized Pendleton isn't as flat as I thought. As you can see in the photo
above, there are no hills, no mountains or anything for as far as
the eye can see. I took this photo again, in the Uhaul and I really wanted to
get a piece of the truck in there. I just slightly held my phone out the window
while moving and prayed it didn't fall out of my hands. I think how you can
clearly see the height of the truck and the truck details, and the
background of Utah is out of focus.


August 6, 2019, Fort Sumner, New Mexico. This is my favorite photo
I've ever taken. I was surprised I got a shot like this on my phone!
My dad is a big fan of history, so on this road trip, he wanted to stop at all the
historical spots. Another cool place we went and saw was Billy the Kid's grave.
This was an old military fort in New Mexico. I saw this teepee in the distance and
decided to walk to it. I got down on my knees and got this photo. I thought
it looked better in black and white because you can see more detail. I also think
this is a great medium shot! Very proud of this photo.

While reading “It’s What I Do,” by Lysney Addario, I learned to take risks within my photography. To not be afraid to share the truth with the public and make sure to get every last detail you can, to give a clear story and explanation as to what’s going on. At the beginning of the book, she talks about going to Afganistan and preparing to take photos of the war. She and a few of her colleagues were in a car watching as rocket-propelled grenades went off. Debating if they should get out of the car or not, they did. Their next dilemma was how to approach people. Do they explain they’re photojournalists? This is something that I can connect the dots with what’s going on today. These protests are going on worldwide, and if a photojournalist goes to one, do they approach it as a job? Or do they join in the protest if they support the matter as well? It comes down to safety. Hello! My name is Paige and this is my first year to LBCC. I am currently majoring in Childhood Development and plan to transfer to Texas State next year to begin my Elementary Education studies. I moved to Corvallis in September but I am from Portland. I enjoy photography. I used to shoot a lot when I was in high school and before I moved. I never took a class or really learned the setting on a camera, I just went with it. My 3 goals in this class are: 1. To learn the different settings and things I can use to make my photos more "interesting." 2. See other people's photos and learn a thing or two from them! 3. For this assignment, I was super conflicted about what I should photograph. Then I realized, with everything going on in the world right now, the protests and such, why not capture that? While in the Zoom on Monday morning, we talked about how photojournalists could go to protests like the ones in Portland and distance themselves and make it known that they're only there to capture the matter. Earlier in the week when I started this assignment, the Portland protests weren't the safest and my parents didn't really want me to put myself in dangerous situations if I actually went to one.
