Photostory

For this assignment, I was super conflicted about what I should photograph. Then I realized, with everything going on in the world right now, the protests and such, why not capture that? While in the Zoom on Monday morning, we talked about how photojournalists could go to protests like the ones in Portland and distance themselves and make it known that they're only there to capture the matter. Earlier in the week when I started this assignment, the Portland protests weren't the safest and my parents didn't really want me to put myself in dangerous situations if I actually went to one. Maybe people would get the wrong message and do something to harm me. So instead, I captured the aftermath. June 2, 2020, Portland, OR. Walking towards the Justice building, you can see the tagging and vandalism that looters have done throughout the city. Peaceful protesting is always the start, but there's a smaller group inside the peacefulness that destroys the city. This wa

While reading “It’s What I Do,” by Lysney Addario, I learned to take risks within my photography. To not be afraid to share the truth with the public and make sure to get every last detail you can, to give a clear story and explanation as to what’s going on. At the beginning of the book, she talks about going to Afganistan and preparing to take photos of the war. She and a few of her colleagues were in a car watching as rocket-propelled grenades went off. Debating if they should get out of the car or not, they did. Their next dilemma was how to approach people. Do they explain they’re photojournalists? This is something that I can connect the dots with what’s going on today. These protests are going on worldwide, and if a photojournalist goes to one, do they approach it as a job? Or do they join in the protest if they support the matter as well? It comes down to safety. Whatever you think is going to be best for the circumstances at hand. Don’t confuse people. When reading this bo

Jadyn Moore, May 18, 2020, in downtown Portland. Jadyn and I went to high school together and we thought the lights in downtown were pretty. She stood behind this tree while I took her photo. I wanted to make the lights blurry and have the focus be on her face.  Jackson Tower in Portland, OR. May 18, 2020. While in downtown Portland, the sun was hitting this building just right. I snapped the photo and the reflections on the Jackson Tower looked beautiful. Crown Point in Corbet, OR, May 18, 2020. After downtown, Jadyn and I went to the Gorge. We weren't really supposed to be there, but the sunshine came out around this time and I couldn't leave without a photo! The blues really mesh together. The rock on the right, there's a hike that people go on and will sit on the edge! I wouldn't dare!!

August 2, 2019, in Pendleton, Oregon. This overall landscape was taken inside a moving Uhaul. My dad and I went on a road trip to Texas to move my sister and her husband. I personally like landscapes the most, especially when going to places I've never been to. When driving through Pendleton, I noticed that the route we took was pretty flat compared to Gresham and Portland hills and mountains. The sky looks like it blends into the land towards the middle of the photo and I'm glad I got to capture that. August 2, 2019, American Fork, Utah. Within the same day, my day and I drove through Utah. I had never been to Utah and when driving through it, I realized Pendleton isn't as flat as I thought. As you can see in the photo above, there are no hills, no mountains or anything for as far as the eye can see. I took this photo again, in the Uhaul and I really wanted to get a piece of the truck in there. I just slightly held my phone out the window

May 6, 2020, Mackinzee O'Neil pushing a puzzle through the dye. She gets an order and puts it onto a plastic/cardboard material board. She then puts that bored onto a flat and pushing it through what's called a dye. The dye then breaks up the picture into little puzzle pieces. She bags up the puzzle, put's it into a box, and sends it to the shipping station. She works at FujiFilm where customized orders are sent and she makes. During this quarantine, people are becoming extremely bored and stir crazy. The warehouse has been super busy with orders and trying to get everything out to people as soon as possible.  May 6, 2020, Julia Sweany put together boxes to start shipping. Most of their orders are from Shutterfly, so they have to put together the Shutterfly box for the puzzle. Some orders that come through are from Collage. Those puzzles go into a smaller, brown box that is more irritating to put together. May 6, 2020, Ju

The explanation behind this photo is during quarantine, there's not much to do. Emily and I had been quarantine together so being together is safe. We decided to social distance and drive around to see the types of shots we could get. I noticed this big empty field on the side of the road and thought maybe we should pull off. While walking around the field, Emily seemed so photogenic, so I snapped a few shots of her. This was one of the shots I got that day. Mug Shot: April 26, 2020, Emily G in the hills. Another boring day in quarantine, we decided to do the same thing we had done before. Emily and I got in the car and drove until we found a cool spot. Our intentions were just to explore the town we live in. We drove up into the fancy hills in Gresham and
